Some help from you bike riders?

I’m really not good at the bike. I don’t really have a great bike. Just a $75 yard sale mountain bike, that is probaly too long for me. I feel like I’m pedaling to beat the band, but I’m not going anywhere. Going up hill, sometimes, I’m afraid I’ll have to get off, and push. I am shifting gears.

I was just curious…how many miles do yall ride, and how fast are you going. I know it will be different for you experts, but what do you recomend for begginers? (Besides going out and buying and expensive bike) Times are way to tight right now. I have to make do with what I have.

And what’s up with the traffic. OMG I have a tiny little shoulder to ride on that’s all crumbling, so I’m hugging the right hand white line, as close as I can. The cars barely move over, even if there are no cars coming in the other direction. And God forbid they should slow down a wee bit. How do you all ride on highways. You must have nerves of steel.

  1. Riding a bike now days can be very terrifying. most automobiles drivers don’t understand that your not trying to be a nuisance, just rying to get in shape and enjoy some of the roads too. don’t expect to get too much back from them, but stay alert…you don’t want to risk injury if you don’t have to.

Riding a bike is alot different then running….you have a machine to worry about and not jsut your own body and stuff. As far as riding to “beat the band”…I think alot of people feel that when they first get going. as you continue to ride you will strengthen certain muscles and be more comfortable on the bike in general, and then things will naturally speed up. Don’t worry so much about speed right now, jsut get a good technique and try to enjoy the new pains of riding and get some good time in the saddle.

  2. Good for you for getting out on your bike. I live in a rural county, so riding on the roads can be (and is mostly) terrifying. I have three miles of roads in my neighborhood–to include some heart working hills, so, I generally do that loop. But, I’ve not been riding very much.

I, too, have a mountain bike. I did get some road tires for it. It’s a very nice bike–but you don’t need an expensive bike to ride and get a good workout. But….do spurge on a good helmet.
